Grayscale Image

Convert PNG, JPG, or WebP to grayscale locally. Preserve image dimensions and preview the black-and-white result before downloading.

Start with your image

One still PNG, JPG, or WebP, up to 30 MB and 24 megapixels. Maximum 8,192 pixels per side. Animated images are rejected.

Image settings

PNG keeps transparency and ignores quality. JPG uses a white background. WebP quality 100 is still lossy.

Your file is processed in your browser and is not uploaded to ToolPixels.

Remove color while keeping shading

Each decoded pixel becomes a weighted grayscale value: 21.26% red, 71.52% green, and 7.22% blue. Red, green, and blue are then set to the same value. This keeps a range of grays, rather than a two-color black-and-white threshold.

The original dimensions and alpha values are preserved in PNG. JPG replaces transparency with white. The original file is unchanged, so keep it if you might need the color version later.

Keep the original

Edits are applied to the original image each time. Export re-encodes the decoded pixels and does not preserve the original metadata. Colors may differ with browser decoding. Large images can exceed device memory even within the stated limits. If processing fails, try a smaller image.
