How to calculate tip
Multiply the amount you want to tip on by the tip percentage as a decimal. Add the tip to the bill, then divide the total if the group is splitting equally.
Open the tip calculatorTip = bill amount × (tip percentage ÷ 100)
Worked tip example
For an $86 bill and an 18% tip:
- Convert 18% to 0.18.
- Tip = $86 × 0.18 = $15.48.
- Total = $86 + $15.48 = $101.48.
A quick estimate is useful: 20% of $86 is $17.20, so an 18% tip should be slightly lower.
Split the bill equally
If four people split the $101.48 total, each share is $101.48 ÷ 4 = $25.37. You can also divide the bill and tip separately: $21.50 bill plus $3.87 tip per person.
| Measure | Whole table | Per person |
|---|---|---|
| Bill | $86.00 | $21.50 |
| Tip | $15.48 | $3.87 |
| Total | $101.48 | $25.37 |
Pre-tax or after-tax amount
Tipping customs differ by location and service. Some people calculate on the pre-tax subtotal; others use the final amount. Check whether a service charge or gratuity has already been included before adding another tip.
When people ordered different amounts, an equal split may not be appropriate. Calculate each person's items and share of common charges first, then apply the agreed tipping method.
Useful mental shortcuts
- 10%: move the decimal one place left.
- 20%: double the 10% amount.
- 15%: add 10% and half of 10%.
- 18%: find 20% and subtract 2%.
For payment, decide how to distribute any rounding difference. Rounding each person's share independently can leave the group a cent short or over.
