Temperature conversion
How to convert temperature
Temperature scales have different zero points as well as different step sizes. That is why Celsius and Fahrenheit conversions require both multiplication and addition.
Open the temperature converterCelsius and Fahrenheit formulas
°F = °C × 9/5 + 32
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
For 20°C, multiply by 9/5 to get 36, then add 32. The result is 68°F. For 95°F, subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9 to get 35°C.
Celsius and Kelvin
Kelvin uses the same interval size as Celsius but starts at absolute zero. Add 273.15 to Celsius: 25°C equals 298.15 K. Subtract 273.15 to convert kelvins to Celsius.
Kelvin is written without a degree symbol.
Convert Fahrenheit and Kelvin
You can convert through Celsius, or use K = (°F − 32) × 5/9 + 273.15. For example, 32°F equals 273.15 K.
Temperature differences need different handling
An increase of 1°C equals an increase of 1 K and 1.8°F. Do not add 32 when converting a temperature difference, because the zero-point offset applies to readings, not intervals. Values below 0 K are outside the ordinary thermodynamic temperature scale.
