How to Rotate an Image by Any Angle

Rotation turns an image around its center. Quarter-turns fix orientation cleanly; custom angles can straighten a horizon but may create empty space around the corners.

Quick answer

A 90 or 270 degree turn swaps width and height. A 180 degree turn keeps the same canvas dimensions.

Choose a rotation angle

Use 90-degree increments for sideways or upside-down photos. Use a small custom angle to straighten a tilted horizon, scan, or architectural line.

Positive and negative directions depend on the control labels. Trust the preview rather than assuming clockwise behavior.

How to rotate image files

  1. Upload the image and identify the needed direction.
  2. Choose 90, 180, 270, or a custom angle.
  3. Rotate, inspect edges and orientation, then download.

The tool re-encodes output, so keep the original when metadata or exact source bytes matter.

Canvas size and empty corners

A rectangle rotated by a custom angle needs a larger box to avoid cutting off corners. This can create transparent triangular areas. JPG cannot store transparency and may fill them.

If you need a solid rectangle, rotate first and crop inward. That removes edge content, so leave extra space when shooting or scanning.

Rotation and orientation metadata

Some cameras store pixels sideways and add an orientation tag. Browsers usually display the corrected view. Exporting often bakes the visible orientation into pixels.

If another app still shows the result incorrectly, verify the downloaded file's dimensions and avoid repeated rotations between apps.
