How to Convert JPG to PNG

Converting JPG to PNG places the already-decoded pixels into a lossless PNG file. It prevents new JPG loss on that export, but cannot restore detail removed earlier.

Quick answer

PNG output is often larger than the JPG source. A format change does not make a compressed photo sharper or create real transparency.

What changes during conversion

JPG stores photographs with lossy compression. PNG stores pixels losslessly and supports transparency. When a JPG is converted, its existing artifacts become part of the PNG pixels.

Dimensions normally stay the same. The new file may be much larger because PNG preserves every decoded pixel variation.

How to convert JPG to PNG

  1. Upload the JPG or JPEG.
  2. Convert and inspect the output dimensions.
  3. Download the PNG and confirm your destination accepts it.

Use a clear filename so the PNG is not confused with the original.

When PNG is the better working format

PNG is useful when later edits need lossless saves, software requires PNG, or the image will be combined with newly created transparent areas.

Conversion alone cannot remove a background. JPG contains no hidden alpha channel to recover.

Avoid false quality expectations

Do not upscale or convert simply to make an image appear higher quality. Existing ringing, blocks, and blur remain.

If original artwork exists as PNG, SVG, or a layered file, export from that source instead.
