How to convert HTML to Markdown
Converting HTML to Markdown works best for semantic content such as headings, paragraphs, lists, links, blockquotes, and code, not for visual page layouts.
Open the HTML to MarkdownWhat converts cleanly
Markdown has direct forms for common document structure. HTML headings become hash or underlined headings, paragraphs remain text blocks, ordered and unordered lists keep their sequence, and emphasis becomes asterisks or underscores.
CSS, forms, embeds, and layout containers have no reliable Markdown equivalent. A useful conversion keeps the readable content and discards presentation that Markdown cannot express.
How to convert HTML to Markdown
- Copy the semantic article or content fragment instead of an entire application shell.
- Choose hash headings or underlined level-one and level-two headings.
- Paste the HTML and select Convert to Markdown.
- Review links, nested lists, blockquotes, and fenced code.
- Preview the Markdown in its final publishing system before use.
The ToolPixels converter sanitizes HTML before conversion and does not run scripts. Images, forms, styles, embeds, and scripting are discarded.
A short conversion example

## Setup
1. Install
2. Run
Content that needs manual review
| HTML content | Likely result |
|---|---|
| Complex tables | Readable pipe-separated row text |
| Layout containers | Content retained, layout discarded |
| Images and embeds | Removed |
| Unsafe links | Removed or reduced to text |
Tables are not emitted as complete Markdown tables by this tool. Rebuild them manually if headers, alignment, or multiline cells matter.
Tips for a cleaner result
- Remove navigation, cookie banners, and repeated footers first.
- Use semantic headings rather than styled
divelements. - Check relative links in the destination repository.
- Verify code-fence language labels and nested list indentation.
- Keep a copy of the HTML until the conversion is reviewed.
