How to calculate grade

For a weighted course grade, multiply each category score by its share of the course, then add the contributions. A heavily weighted exam affects the result more than a small assignment.

Weighted grade = sum of (score × weight) ÷ sum of weights

Worked weighted-grade example

CategoryScoreWeightContribution
Assignments88%30%26.4
Midterm76%30%22.8
Final exam92%40%36.8

Add the contributions: 26.4 + 22.8 + 36.8 = 86%. The weights total 100%, so no further normalization is needed.

Do not simply average the three scores. Their unweighted mean is 85.33%, which answers a different question.

When completed weights do not total 100%

Suppose only assignments and the midterm are complete. Their weights total 60%, and their contributions total 49.2. The current grade on completed work is:

49.2 ÷ 60 × 100 = 82%

This is different from treating the uncompleted final as zero, which would show 49.2% for the entire course. Check how your teacher or learning system displays in-progress grades.

Points-based courses

If every point is equally valuable, use total earned points divided by total possible points. Earning 184 points out of 220 gives 184 ÷ 220 × 100 = 83.64%. Do not also apply category weights unless the syllabus requires them.

Find the score needed on a final

If 60% of the course is complete with an 82% current grade, it contributes 49.2 points. To finish with 85%, the remaining 40% must contribute 35.8 points. The required final score is 35.8 ÷ 40 × 100 = 89.5%.

If the answer exceeds 100%, the target is not reachable under the stated weights unless extra credit or another grading rule applies.
