Pixels divided by the root font size

The formula is rem = pixels / root font size. With a 16px root, 24px equals 1.5rem. The default 16px is an example, not a measurement of your website.

rem is relative to the root element, not the parent element. Negative results are useful for properties that accept negative lengths, such as margins, but are invalid for font-size.
