How to count words accurately
A word counter identifies word-like units separated by boundaries such as spaces and punctuation. The exact total depends on how contractions, hyphens, numbers, and scripts are handled.
Open the Word Counter toolKnow what the count includes
For simple prose, words are separated by whitespace: Three red boats has three words. Real text is more complicated. don't is usually one word, while a hyphenated compound may be counted as one or two depending on the rule.
Use one counter consistently
If a school, publisher, or form enforces a limit, its own counter is authoritative. Use ToolPixels while drafting, then confirm in the destination.
How to count words
- Paste the complete text into the ToolPixels Word Counter.
- Select Update counts if the result has not refreshed.
- Read words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, lines, and estimated reading time.
- Remove headings, references, or captions only if the stated rule excludes them.
- Check the final version again after editing.
Your text is processed locally in the browser and is not uploaded or saved by ToolPixels.
Why counters can disagree
- Hyphenated terms may be one token or several.
- Contractions and possessives contain apostrophes.
- URLs, email addresses, and version numbers have internal punctuation.
- Some languages do not separate every word with spaces.
- Emoji and symbols may or may not be treated as words.
A count is the output of a defined segmentation rule, not a universal grammatical fact. Small differences are normal around edge cases.
Reading time is an estimate
Estimated reading time divides the word total by an assumed reading speed and rounds the result. Technical vocabulary, tables, unfamiliar names, and accessibility needs can change actual reading time substantially.
Use the estimate for planning, not as a promise. For scripts, speaking time uses a different rate and should include pauses, demonstrations, and audience interaction.
Common questions
Do titles count as words?
A mechanical counter includes them when they are pasted. Whether an assignment includes them is a policy question, so check its instructions.
Are numbers counted?
Standalone numbers and number-containing tokens are commonly treated as words. Formatting such as commas and decimal points can affect tokenization.
Can I count without uploading my text?
Yes. The free ToolPixels Word Counter runs in the current browser and does not send the text to ToolPixels.
