How to add a text watermark to a PDF
Add a visible label such as Draft, Sample or Confidential to chosen pages while preserving your original file.
Open the text watermark toolChoose clear watermark text
Keep the wording short enough to remain legible at the chosen size. A centered mark is conspicuous; a corner mark interferes with less content. Lower opacity helps underlying text remain readable, but very low opacity can disappear when printed.
Test one representative page. A setting that works on a sparse cover can hide content on a dense page.
Add the text watermark
- Choose a PDF in the Add Text Watermark to PDF tool.
- Enter the physical pages to watermark, starting at page 1. You can combine ranges and individual pages.
- Enter the watermark text.
- Set its font size, position, margin and opacity. Seventy-two PDF points equal one inch.
- Select Add text watermark, review every affected page and download the new PDF.
For a draft sent for review, a centered, low-opacity label is easy to notice. For an internal classification, a smaller top or bottom corner label may be less disruptive.
Watermarks are not security controls
A text watermark covers page content visually, but it does not redact the content underneath, prevent copying or encrypt the file. Use proper redaction for sensitive details and appropriate access controls for restricted documents.
Common questions
Can I apply different words to different pages?
One run uses the same text and styling on all selected pages. For different labels, export one group, then process the resulting PDF again with another selection.
Does the tool upload my PDF?
No. The PDF is processed locally in your browser and is not saved by ToolPixels.
