How to convert time

Time-unit conversion works cleanly for fixed durations. Convert through seconds and keep calendar months and clock times separate.

Use seconds as the base

1 minute = 60 seconds; 1 hour = 3,600 seconds

Multiply when moving to a smaller unit and divide when moving to a larger one. For example, 2.5 hours × 60 equals 150 minutes.

Days and weeks

For elapsed-duration arithmetic, 1 day is 24 hours and 1 week is 7 days. Thus 3.5 days equals 84 hours, and 2 weeks equals 1,209,600 seconds.

This fixed definition does not model daylight-saving transitions, where a local calendar day can contain 23 or 25 elapsed hours.

Milliseconds and microseconds

One second is 1,000 milliseconds or 1,000,000 microseconds. A duration of 0.025 seconds equals 25 ms. Preserve enough significant digits when working with short technical timings.

Do not confuse duration with clock time

A value such as 1.5 hours means 1 hour 30 minutes, but 1:50 on a clock is 1 hour 50 minutes, not 1.5 hours. Months and years also vary in length, so converting them to seconds requires a stated convention or specific dates.
