How to remove extra spaces from text

Whitespace cleanup can collapse repeated spaces and tidy blank lines, but the safest settings depend on whether the text is prose, tabular data, or code.

Identify the whitespace problem

Extra spacing can appear as repeated spaces between words, tabs copied from a table, spaces at line ends, or multiple blank lines between paragraphs. These issues look similar but may need different cleanup rules.

Prose example

Keep   this  sentence. becomes Keep this sentence. when repeated horizontal whitespace is collapsed.

How to remove extra spaces

  1. Paste the text into the ToolPixels Remove Extra Spaces tool.
  2. Choose whether to trim whitespace at the start and end of each line.
  3. Choose whether repeated blank lines should be reduced.
  4. Run the cleanup and inspect paragraph breaks and indentation.
  5. Copy or download the result.

Work on a copy when formatting carries meaning. The tool processes the text locally in your browser.

Preserve meaningful whitespace

Do not collapse spaces blindly in source code, Markdown code blocks, fixed-width tables, poetry, or data where columns are aligned with spaces. Tabs can also be semantic in formats such as TSV and in some programming languages.

For ordinary prose, one space between words is usually appropriate. A line break or blank line should be handled separately rather than turned into an ordinary space without review.

Clean text copied from other sources

  • PDFs may insert line breaks at every visual line.
  • Web pages can contribute nonbreaking spaces.
  • Word processors may copy tabs and indentation.
  • OCR can add spaces inside words or omit them entirely.

An extra-spaces tool corrects repeated whitespace, not spelling or OCR segmentation. Compare the cleaned output with the source when accuracy matters.

Common questions

Will this remove paragraph breaks?

Not unless you choose an option that normalizes blank lines. Review the output before replacing the original.

Is a tab the same as a space?

No. Both are whitespace, but a tab can represent a field boundary or indentation. Decide whether it is safe to normalize in your content.
