How to view PDF metadata
Inspect the document properties and page information that a PDF makes available without changing the file.
Open the PDF metadata viewerWhat PDF metadata can contain
Common fields include title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer and creation or modification dates. Page information may include count and dimensions. Not every PDF contains every field, and values can be blank, outdated or entered incorrectly.
Metadata is descriptive, not proof. An author name or date can help with organization, but it does not authenticate who created a file.
Inspect a PDF
- Choose one file in the PDF Metadata Viewer.
- Select View metadata.
- Read the available document and page details.
- Use Copy report if you need the displayed information elsewhere.
- Reset the tool to clear the current file and result.
The tool reads the file in your browser and does not upload it to ToolPixels.
How to interpret the result
- Creator often names the application that made the source document.
- Producer often names the software that generated the PDF.
- Creation and modification dates can reflect software settings and may not match the real history.
- Title and author are optional properties, not guaranteed content facts.
Common questions
Why are some fields missing?
The source application may not have written them, or a later workflow may have removed them.
Does viewing metadata remove it?
No. This viewer reports available values without exporting a modified PDF.
Can metadata reveal every edit?
No. It is not a complete audit trail, and values can be changed or omitted.
