How to count paragraphs in text
A paragraph is usually a non-empty block of text separated from the next block by one or more blank lines. That definition is simple, but copied formatting can change the count.
Open the Paragraph Counter toolDefine the paragraph boundary
In plain text, a paragraph ends where a blank line separates two non-empty blocks. A single visual line break inside an address, poem, or wrapped line may belong to the same block. In HTML, paragraph elements define boundaries explicitly.
Example
First block.
Second line of first block.
[blank line]
Second block.
This text has two non-empty paragraphs when the first two lines remain part of one block.
How to count paragraphs
- Paste the final plain text into the ToolPixels Paragraph Counter.
- Check that intended paragraph breaks contain a blank line.
- Remove accidental empty blocks at the beginning or end.
- Read the paragraph total together with words, characters, and lines.
The tool counts non-empty paragraph blocks locally in your browser. Repeated blank lines between the same two blocks do not create extra paragraphs.
Why word processors may disagree
A word processor can distinguish a paragraph mark from a manual line break. Pasting into a plain textarea may normalize those marks into newline characters. Text copied from PDFs can also contain a line break after every visual line, even when the source appears to have one paragraph.
Turn on formatting marks in the source editor when you need to understand the difference, then count the exported version that will actually be used.
Lists, headings, and short blocks
A counter cannot infer editorial meaning. A heading separated by blank lines is a non-empty block and can count as a paragraph under a structural rule, even though an editor would call it a heading. The same applies to individual list items.
For an assignment with a specific definition, follow the instructor or platform rule. Use the tool for a consistent mechanical count and adjust only when the stated rule requires it.
Common questions
Do empty lines count?
No. They separate non-empty blocks but are not paragraphs themselves.
Does indentation create a paragraph?
Not by itself in plain text. A new non-empty block separated by blank lines is the reliable signal used here.
