How to use a list randomizer

Put one item on each line, preserve intentional duplicates and blank entries, shuffle once under an agreed rule, and verify the item count.

Open the List Randomizer

Important: the ToolPixels tool treats every line as an item. Blank lines, including a final empty line, are preserved and shuffled.

Prepare and shuffle your list

  1. Collect the complete list before randomizing.
  2. Place exactly one item on each line. Keep identifiers when names are similar.
  3. Remove accidental blank lines, but retain any blank that is meant to be an item.
  4. Paste into the free List Randomizer and select Shuffle list.
  5. Copy or download the shuffled result.

The tool accepts up to 10,000 lines or 200,000 characters and normalizes line endings to LF. It changes order only, so repeated lines remain repeated.

Use the shuffled order correctly

TaskMethod
Random presentation orderUse the complete shuffled output from top to bottom
Choose one itemAgree that the first shuffled line wins
Create groupsShuffle once, then deal entries in order across groups
Waitlist orderKeep the full output as the audit record

If eligibility or priority matters, filter the list first or create separate eligible groups. Randomization does not make an inappropriate input list fair.

Verify nothing was lost

  • Compare the input and output line counts.
  • Search for unique identifiers rather than relying only on display names.
  • Confirm duplicates appear the same number of times.
  • Save the output before assigning from it when the order needs to be documented.

Do not repeatedly shuffle and select the most convenient order. If rerolls are permitted, define the reason and maximum number before the first result.

Common questions

Should duplicate items be removed?

Only if they are accidental. A duplicate gives that value multiple positions in the list and can increase its chance of being selected first.

Does the randomizer upload my list?

No. Input and results are processed locally in your browser and are not uploaded or saved by ToolPixels.

Can I reproduce a shuffle?

The tool does not expose a seed. Copy or download the result when an exact order must be retained.
