How to Use a Color Picker on an Image
An image color picker samples the pixel under your pointer and reports its color value. The key is choosing a representative pixel rather than a highlight, shadow, or compression artifact.

HEX and RGB describe the same screen color in different notation. For example, #191919 is rgb(25, 25, 25).
Prepare the image for accurate sampling
Use the highest-quality version available. Screenshots and compressed JPG files can contain small color variations around text and edges. If you need a brand color, sample a broad, flat area rather than an antialiased boundary.
The picker reports decoded pixel values from the image in your browser. It cannot identify a paint formula, printing ink, or the original designer's named swatch.
How to use Color Picker from Image
- Choose a clean source image and upload it.
- Select the center of a flat color area, away from edges and glare.
- Compare nearby samples, then copy the HEX or RGB value you need.
Sample several nearby pixels before deciding. A seemingly solid wall, fabric, sky, or skin tone usually contains lighting and texture variations.
Build a balanced palette
Start with a dominant color, then sample one dark neutral, one light neutral, and one accent. This produces a more useful interface palette than collecting many nearly identical shades.
Check text contrast before using a sampled color as a background. A color that looks clear inside a photograph may not provide enough contrast behind small text.
Why sampled colors differ
JPG compression blends colors in small blocks, while resizing creates new pixels by interpolation. Screenshots may also include display scaling. These processes explain why a picker can return several values from an area that looks uniform.
For exact work, use an original PNG or another lossless source and sample multiple pixels.
Try it in your browser
The free ToolPixels Color Picker from Image processes your file locally in the browser. Review the result and keep the original file for comparison.
