How to generate fake data

Create clearly fictional records that match the shape your test needs, export them in the right format, and keep them out of real customer workflows.

Open the Fake Data Generator

Use fake data for behavior, not truth. It can test layouts, imports and filters. It cannot represent real demographics, deliverable addresses or verified users.

Generate a test dataset

  1. Decide how many rows are needed. Begin with a small sample that is easy to inspect.
  2. Open the free Fake Data Generator and choose 1 to 1,000 rows.
  3. Select JSON for APIs and JavaScript workflows, or CSV for spreadsheets and table imports.
  4. Generate, review several records, then copy or download the output.

Each record includes fictional, id, name, email, age, city and active fields. The fictional label is a useful safeguard, so preserve it where possible.

Choose JSON or CSV

FormatUse it whenCheck
JSONTesting an API response, component or scriptTypes such as numbers and booleans remain typed
CSVTesting imports, grids or spreadsheetsThe importer recognizes the header row and UTF-8 text

Do not rename columns merely to make an import pass if production uses a different schema. Map the generated fields deliberately or transform a copy so the test remains representative.

Test more than the happy path

A generated sample is useful for volume and variety, but robust tests also need deliberate edge cases. Add separate fixtures for empty strings, maximum lengths, duplicate identifiers, missing optional fields, unexpected characters and boundary ages when your application permits them.

Keep deterministic fixtures for automated tests that must reproduce the same failure. Use newly generated data for exploratory checks where variation is helpful.

Keep test data safe

  • Never copy production records and call them fake.
  • Use reserved or non-deliverable domains for test email workflows.
  • Disable outbound email, SMS and payment actions in test environments.
  • Clearly label screenshots, demos and exports as fictional.
  • Do not use generated identities to impersonate people or create deceptive accounts.

ToolPixels creates the records locally in your browser and does not upload or save them. Your downstream system may store imported data, so apply its normal retention and access controls.

Common questions

Will every run be identical?

No. If exact repeatability matters, save a reviewed fixture in your test repository.

Can generated records replace user research?

No. Fictional data is useful for technical tests, not conclusions about real people or behavior.
