How to use a dice roller

Select the number and type of dice, add any modifier once to the total, and roll. The notation tells you exactly what the result represents.

Example: 2d6 + 3 means roll two six-sided dice, add their face values, then add 3 once. A roll of 4 and 5 gives 4 + 5 + 3 = 12.

Understand dice notation

In NdS, N is the number of dice and S is the number of sides. A d20 is one 20-sided die; 3d8 is three 8-sided dice. A plus or minus number after the dice is a modifier applied to their combined total.

NotationMeaningPossible total
1d6One six-sided die1 to 6
2d6Two six-sided dice2 to 12
1d20 + 5One d20, then add 56 to 25
3d4 - 2Three d4, then subtract 21 to 10

Roll dice online step by step

  1. Open the free Dice Roller.
  2. Choose d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20 or d100. Select Custom for 2 to 1,000 sides.
  3. Set the number of dice from 1 to 100.
  4. Enter a positive, negative or zero total modifier.
  5. Select Roll dice. Read the individual faces before the adjusted total.

Listing every face makes the result auditable. If a rule depends on matching dice, the highest die or natural rolls, use the individual results rather than only the sum.

Know what totals are likely

One fair die gives each face the same chance. With several dice, totals are not equally likely because more combinations produce middle values. Two d6 can total 7 in six ways but total 2 in only one way.

The expected average of one standard die is halfway between its lowest and highest faces. For a d6 that is 3.5, and for 2d6 it is 7. This describes many rolls, not a promise for a single roll.

Set the rules before rolling

  • Agree on dice, count and modifier before revealing a result.
  • State whether rerolls, advantage or dropped dice are permitted.
  • Do not reroll simply because an outcome is inconvenient.
  • Copy or download the output when a record matters.

The tool handles one dice type and one total modifier per roll. For mixed pools such as 1d8 + 2d6, roll each group separately and combine the recorded totals.

Common questions

Is d100 a 100-sided die?

In this tool, yes: it produces an integer from 1 through 100. Some tabletop systems use two ten-sided dice for percentile rolls, so follow the rules of your game.

Can the modifier change individual dice?

No. It is applied once after all faces are summed.

Are rolls uploaded?

No. Rolls are generated locally in your browser and are not uploaded or saved by ToolPixels.
