How to count characters in text

A character count usually includes letters, numbers, punctuation, spaces, and line breaks. Before counting, decide whether whitespace should be included.

What counts as a character?

In ordinary writing, every typed symbol and whitespace mark occupies a position in the text. The short phrase Red fox has seven characters including the space and six without whitespace.

Two useful totals

Characters: everything in the text.
Characters without whitespace: the same text after spaces, tabs, and line breaks are excluded.

How to count characters

  1. Copy the exact text you plan to submit or publish.
  2. Paste it into the ToolPixels Character Counter.
  3. Read the total characters and characters without whitespace.
  4. Check word and line totals if the destination has related limits.

The count updates in your browser. Hidden leading spaces, blank lines, and trailing line breaks still affect the inclusive total, so trim them only if they will not be submitted.

Character count is not byte count

Text can be measured as visible symbols, Unicode code points, UTF-16 units, grapheme clusters, or encoded bytes. These totals agree for basic English text but may differ for emoji, accented characters formed with combining marks, and some scripts.

Many browser tools, JavaScript fields, and platform limits use UTF-16 units. A single symbol outside the Basic Multilingual Plane can therefore count as two units. If a specification says bytes, use the required encoding instead of a character counter.

Count the final version

  • Smart quotes may replace straight quotes without changing visible length.
  • Windows and Unix line endings use different byte sequences.
  • Copying from a PDF can add unexpected line breaks.
  • Nonbreaking spaces can look like normal spaces.

When a limit is strict, paste the exact final text into the same destination after checking it. Different services can define characters differently.

Common questions

Are spaces characters?

Yes for a total character count. A separate no-whitespace total is useful when a rule explicitly excludes them.

Why does another counter differ?

It may count Unicode sequences, line endings, or whitespace differently. Check the service's definition before treating either result as wrong.
