Area conversion
How to convert area
Area conversion factors are squared length factors. That single detail explains why 1 square meter is 10,000 square centimeters, not 100.
Open the area converterSquare the length conversion factor
1 m = 100 cm, so 1 m² = 100² cm² = 10,000 cm²
Write the linear relationship, then square both the number and the unit. For square feet and square inches, 1 ft = 12 in, so 1 ft² = 144 in².
Convert hectares, acres, and square kilometers
One hectare is exactly 10,000 m², and 100 hectares make 1 km². One international acre is about 4,046.8564224 m². Therefore, 2.5 hectares equals 25,000 m², while 10 acres equals about 40,468.56 m².
Convert a measured rectangle
If you have length and width rather than an area, first convert both dimensions to the same length unit, then multiply. A 12 ft by 15 ft room has an area of 180 ft². Converting 180 ft² using 0.09290304 m² per ft² gives about 16.72 m².
Avoid these area errors
- Do not apply a length factor directly to an area.
- Confirm whether a land record uses the international foot or a historical survey definition.
- Round only after the final multiplication.
