How to add page numbers to a PDF
Number a whole document or selected pages, control the first displayed number, and keep the original PDF unchanged.
Open the page number toolPlan the numbering before you start
Physical PDF pages always start at 1 in the selection field. The number printed on a page can start elsewhere. For example, if the cover is physical page 1 and you select pages 2-8 with a starting number of 1, the first numbered content page displays 1.
Selection and display are separate. Select physical pages first, then choose the starting number shown on the first selected page.
Add PDF page numbers
- Choose a PDF in the Add PDF Page Numbers tool.
- Enter the selected pages using values such as 2-8 or 1-3, 5.
- Set the starting number and choose either number only or number with the last number.
- Choose a font size, position and margin. A margin of 72 PDF points equals one inch.
- Select Add page numbers, inspect the exported pages and download the result.
Bottom center is familiar for reports. Top corners can work better when the bottom already contains notes or a footer. Leave enough margin to prevent the number from touching page content.
Avoid common numbering errors
- Do not confuse printed page labels with physical positions in the file.
- Check pages with different sizes or orientations individually.
- Use a starting number that reflects omitted covers or front matter.
- Keep the original because adding numbers changes the PDF and may affect signed or interactive documents.
Common questions
Can I leave the cover unnumbered?
Yes. Start the selected range at physical page 2 and set the starting number to 1.
Are existing printed numbers removed?
No. New numbers are placed over the page. If numbers already exist, choose a different position or edit the source document instead.
